I happened to be doing a bit of work-related researching in Google today and stumbled on this web site. I've most definitely put in a little bit of time here reading and procrastinating! You have some very nice insights here, so I'm going to add you to my personal Google Reader for the future. All the best!

Hello, just a short comment to drop by and express thx for your remarks in this post. I mysteriously ended up here just after reading through up on a bunch of celebrity conditioning stuff over on Yahoo... guess I lost track of exactly what I was doing! Anyway, thank you and I will make an effort to swing in in the future and read some of your future remarks. Cheers!

My favorite combo for wading' for smallies would be ~ 6'6 medium light or medium action spinning rod. And a ~ Spinning reel filled with 8 lb. trilene mono. Peel that floro off the spinning reel and spool it up with some mono. Trilene XL Smooth Cast is my favorite. That bait caster will not throw those small lures you normally use for small mouth bass very well.

If you're wading, i'd go with the spinning rod.
I've wet waded for Smallies for years on the Susquehanna river in PA
currently I use a 7' fast action spinning rod on a shimano reel w/ 6 lb mono. I would think your 6'6" medium action spinning rod would be fine, i'd just go a little lighter on the mono (6-8 lb) florocarbon is fine, but Smallies (for the most part) at this time of year are not terribly line shy.
The reason I use 6 lb test is because if I hang up on rocks I can break off alot easier than w/ heavier line. I'm not too worried about losing a few jigs and Mr. Twisters since they are not expensive. If I'm using crawfish I can always tie another hook on.
If you plan on using rapalas, plugs, and other more expensive lures, then go with the heavier line
