Are you sure that your line is breaking or are your knots coming untied?
If you get a little curly que at the end of your line then the hook is coming untied.
Braking 40 lb. BRAIDED is pretty tough to do. It is even pretty resistant to being bitten off.

Change brands some braids aren't that good. I use spider wire or gorilla tough brand in walmart. Make sure your drag isn't set too tight. You just have to be patient and tire them out strippers get huge and usually run hard in running water. They can pull out a lot of line in a hurry if they are in running water. But try adjusting your drag first then if it still breaks. change brands.

You might have a bad batch of line or just a poor brand. I use 20# braided line surf fishing from jetties and have landed multiple fish over 40" without ever having a break off. (I have lost more than a few to my errors though!) I would also follow the suggestion of checking your knots someone made previously. Some knots are not very conducive to braided lines.
You can also try using a mono leader. That will give your line some extra stretch.

If the line is actually breaking you need to change brands. There has to be some kind of defect in the line for 40 lb test to be broken twice. But I suspect it is more then likely coming untied at the knot.
