Braided Fishing Line Rig?
I am pretty sure that I’m going to get 150 yds. of braided fishing line for Christmas and I was wondering how most people rig it. I fish off of my dock, off of drawbridges, and off of the boat in no deeper that 30ft. of water. Should I use a lot of weight? A leadhead jig? And how long should the leader line be, (I’m using 25lb monofilament). Thanks a bunch!

I haven’t used it yet (lucky you, getting it for Christmas), but I plan on buying either fifty-pound or sixty-five pound braid for fishing big swimbaits for bass. I use thirty-pound monofilament right now.
But, I’m just guessing, since the diameter of the stuff is “supposed to be” thinner than mono, the weight or lures you’re using really doesn’t matter.
I want to switch to braid because it may improve my casting distance a bit, but also because the heavy stuff is damn near impossible to break, and when I’m flingin’ a hunnerd dollar lure, I sure as sh*t don’t wanna break it off.
depends on what you are fishing for and how you plan to fish for them. I’ll tell you how i use the braids i use and you can email me with more details if you want my advice.
I use 30-50 lb braid for catfish and carp. For the carp i use a 12″, 17 pound mono leader because i find if there arent many around and i dont chum heavily they can be line shy.. For catfish I use a slip rig, and i do not use a mono leader…. the reason i choose not to use a mono leader is because i like the non-stretch action of the braid. Seems to me you get an instant hook set from the fast/heavy hitting catfish with the non stretch braid. And you see the action on your rod if something is ’sniffing’ around your bait. because of this stiff line action.
You should choose the weight of your tackle based on your needs… i fish in large rivers mostly and so need some weight to keep my bait from being moved by current. When i fish in still water i will use alot less weight. I do find a heavy braid takes a bit more weight for long casts than light mono would also tho…. i would experiment with weight if i were you.
I use braid exclusively and you want to put mono on your reel first that the braid. The braid is slippery and will turn on your spool. I rig mine up with about 6 feet of fluorocarbon attached to the braid with a swivel. Than I attach a jig to the fluorocarbon. A 1/4 ounce jig should be fine. The braid is super strong and sensitive. Enjoy.
