Basically what he said. Fluorocarbons are being used as leaders because it has basically ZERO visibility compared to mono and braid. Each line has advantages and disadvantages. Take braid for example. Very small diameter compared to mono or fluoro meaning you can spool a much larger length of line on your reel leading to the ability to catch bigger game that spool off a lot of line upon hookup as well as longer distance casting. The disadvantage to braid is it’s visibilty in water. Some fish depend on sight while others depend on smell and energy distress signals given off by prey. Thats just some info. Its not difficult to understand if you had the three in front of you. I use all three in some sort of application.
I see a lot of salt water guys using steel leaders when they are not needed. The less visibilty you can present a fish the better. Use each accordingly.
Most inexpensive fishing line is mono.
The braided lines were used for huge fish like Marlin and Tuna. The invention of the Spectra fiber has allowed anglers to use much heavier test line, which is smaller in diameter. For example, I use 20 lb test braided as my main line and an 8 lb test fluorocarbon leader. This allows me to handle large bass and trout (some to 15 lbs). The 20 lb braided is the same diameter as 6 lb mono. I am sure you can see the advantages of having a line which is more then 3x stronger with the same reel line capacity.
Another advantage is that there is almost no stretch when you set the hook. You can also feel a lot more movement with the line. Very sensitive!
Here are some disadvantages:
* It can cut you to the bone if you wrap it around your hand.
* You will need a knife or scissors to cut it. Fingernail clippers will seldom cut a braided line.
* Fish can see it as well as a 1/2″ rope, so you must use a leader for most fish.
* The line tends to float, which is good if you are drift fishing, but can be a problem if you are using a deep diving crank bait. It just won’t run as deep with a braid.
The invention of fluorocarbon has really helped catch fish which are line shy. This usually happens with crystal clear waters. The fish won’t bite because they can see the line. Fluorocarbon has the same light transmitting factors as water, so it disappears to the fish! It also has very little stretch. And remember the floating problem with crank baits? well, it goes away with fluorocarbon, because it is a sinking line. It may not make much difference to a casual fisherman, but my clients catch more fish because of fluorocarbon leaders, which I tie in advanced. I have not seen pre-tied fluorocarbon leaders in the stores.
I hope this helps.
Keep you hooks sharp and line tight.
Monofilament line is a thin string made from a single fiber. Most fishing line is made from monofilament because of its strength, availability in all pound-test kinds, and low cost.
Braided line is one of the strongest types of fishing line in relation to its diameter. Braids are made by braiding or weaving fibers of a man-made material like Spectra or micro-dyneema into a strand of line.
