Start off with clippers and needlenose pliers, get a tackle box get hooks, bobbers, sinkers.
Then for bait start off with worms, spinners, spoons, and jigs work good for bass. Worms work everywhere and for almost everyfish.

the essentials are
bobbers
split shot sinkers
jigs (many different sizes although 1/4 ounce is standard)
leaders (depending on whats underneath)
spoons (five of diamonds, and toad back patterns are good)
an OG rapala
a rig (various sizes)
and of course some bait, leeches and shiners always produce when the fish are biting.
you could get spinners instead of spoons but it doesnt really matter
with these bare essentials you could combine them to fish lots of different species.
