What Rod And Reel Combo Should I Get?
I need a baitcaster combo. I am fishing for perch smallmouth and largemouth. What action should i get? And how long should my rod be? Also what pound test braid should i get to catch those fish? for under 60 dollars

Hey I work in the fishing dept. of a sporting goods store…In addition I’ve been an avid fisherman my whole life.
For both largemouth and smallmouth I’d recommend getting a 6′6″ to a 7′ medium action Ugly Stick it will be perfect for anything from bass to big pike. (I landed a tailhooked 35lb Salmon in fast current with mine without problem) and for right around $30-$40 you can get rod and reel combos.
I’d actually recommend a 300 series spinning reel vs. the baitcaster…unless you are incredibly good at it (which im not) you’ll run into the problem of constant backlashes which happens when you cast.. if you don’t hold your thumb just right on the line it will snarl all up and you’ll be spending hours unwinding it instead of fishing. Just a matter of preference though I guess. You see lots of professional bass fisherman using baitcasters.
As for line probably the most universal poundage would be an 8lb test. monofilament. And many people are using the new low/no stretch mono which will offer more sensitivity in feeling the fish.
Braided lines are VERY strong you almost can’t break a fish off with braided line. However your bate will not have as much action to it as it will with mono which is often the key between getting a bite and not.
Long story short, for bass fishing get a 6′6″ medium action Ugly Stick (extremely durable) with a 30, 300, 3000 series (varies with manufacturer) spinning reel and equip it with 8lb test monofilament. and you can catch just about anything.
BTW you can catch all the perch on this type of set up you want but it wont be a very fun fight…for fish like perch and bluegills ect. I’d get an ultra-light action rod.
Hope this helps
