When Fishing Topwater Frog/toad Baits,is It Necessary To Use A Fluorocarbon Leader Between The Braided Line &?
I highly recommend using a flouracarbon leader while fishing topwater, crankbaits, jerkbaits, and even while puting bait on the bottom. In most places fish become line shy and will not take bait if they can see the line.
On my reel that has braided line the set up is as follows: 125 – 150 yards of 12 pound mono attached to 30 pound braid attached to about 6 foot flourocarbo leader.
Good Luck and Tight Lines

Its more a matter of personal preference but yes i like to for a few reasons firstly if its clear water the braid will stand out, secondly i use it if the braid is too sensitive and you want somewhat of a “shock-absorber”. Also its better for knot strength.
That depends on water clarity. If you are fishing crystal clear water ( able to see bottom) then use a flourocarbon leader for better results. This’ll throw the fish off a bit and allow your lure to seem more natural.
If you’re fishing heavy cover, stick with the braid because you’ll need that extra power to rip through the weeds and what not. Using floroucarbon here is just a matter of choice at this point. If you feel that fish are finicky or just skittish, try the floro line to throw in a twist.
It is not absolutely “necessary”, but it sure does help. The more natural you can make your presentation the better chance you will have of fooling that big old bucket mouth. Also, fluorocarbon has less drag than braided lines, so again it makes the presentation more natural. Good luck!
Well, first of all, I wouldn’t use braided line on a top water. Mono is probably the best, but I and others do use flourocarbon.
Here’s the reason:
On top water action, the first reaction is to set the hook when we see activity on the water. We usually set too soon and lose the fish. If we use mono, it has that stretch, which gives little more time to set the hook.
Unless you are an expert on topwater fishing, use mono.
no tie the braid
