When Fishing With Spoons Should I Use A Swivel?

8

When I’m spin-cast fishing I almost exclusively use spoons or spinners, attached to a fluorocarbon leader off of braided line. Since I use braided lines I am not too concerned with line twists, and I could replace the leader easily. Would attaching a spoon or inline spinner directly to the line instead of attaching it to snap swivel give the lures more action, or should I just keep using snap swivels?

I would use a swivel-so no controversy from me, lol ive been adding a swivel for years, its makes it a lot easier to fish with as changing spinners is quick and simple, ive found the difference between using them and not using them to be very little.

In my years of fishin’ annnnd am sure that I’ll get a’ lot of controversy on my response but, when it comes ta’ inline spinners and spoons I’ll use stainless steel ball bearing type snap swivels, specifically SPRO and or Sampo (color black). Again possible controversy on my use of them but, this only be personal preference. Now when it comes ta’ lures, plugs etc., I’ll go Polamar and or Clinch knots tied directly to them ;) … < ' ( (( > < SPRO:http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa…

Note: As for your original question, I myself don’t think the action on a’ inliner or spoon is hindered that much, besides I’m gettin’ up in years/lazy and it’s much quicker/easier ta’ use, SPECIFICALLY with inline spinners or spoons……
Addtional info: If ya’ go with tyin’ your line directly to a spoon make sure it has a’ split ring in it ~ in otherwords don’t tie it to the hole in the spoon itself ;)

I do not use snap swivels. I do use a swivel though. I run my mainline to a micro swivel, then my leader down to a duolock. I like that MUCH better than the snap swivel. I used to use that, but I realized that it would hinder some of the action of my spoons. I could feel a significant performance increase when I switched over to the duolock. I noticed that the “thump-thump” action was more pronounced and would wobble in a more controlled pattern.
The micro swivels are great because they take MUCH less energy to spin them, so the greatly reduce line twist. This eliminates the need for ball bearing swivels, and ends up saving money too!
I’ve landed 40-50lb King salmon on those micro swivels, and they have NEVER given me a problem. They are tiny, but rated to 30lb breaking strength….and they’re only 3/16in long!

are you fishing for muskies where you would need a heavy braid? if you’re fishing light lures for trout and such, l’d just go with 4 or 6 mono tied directly to the lure. fewer knots for starters and if you do get a few twists in your line, you can get them out easily enough by clipping off your lure, get your line in the water, walk down the bank a few yards and reeling it back in under a little tension. extra hardware of any sort is going to affect your lures action to some degree. most manufacturers recommend tying direct.

Like the others have said it is more convenient, but if you are tournament fishing or fishing easily spooked fish then dont use them

I tried using a spoon with no swivel once and I ended up with a terrible nest of line after the first cast.
