Ringed Hooks Rigging Illustrations:

BUTT, ANAL OR TAIL HOOKING

HOOK JUST BEHIND VENT AND JUST INSIDE ANAL FIN. HELPS YOUR BAIT SWIM DOWNWARD AND AWAY FROM THE BOAT QUICKLY. SINCE THE HOOK IS EMBEDDED IN SOFT TISSUE, A LIGHT LOB OR UNDERHAND CAST WORKS BEST TO KEEP THE BAIT ON THE HOOK.

HOOKS RIGGED WITH ACTION
RINGS ALLOW LIVE BAIT, SUCH
AS SARDINES, ANCHOVIES AND
MACKEREL, TO SWIM MORE
NATURALLY THAN ON A FIXED
HOOK. THIS DRAWS MORE
STRIKES ON A SLOW BITE AND
HELPS YOU BOAT MORE FISH.

Butt

COLLAR HOOKING

PREFERRED METHOD FOR ANCHOVIES AND ALSO USED FOR SMALL SARDINES. BAIT IS HOOKED THROUGH THE COLLARBONE IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE GILL PLATES. THIS METHOD HELPS TO KEEP SMALL BAITS LIVELY AND SWIMMING JUST UNDER THE SURFACE.

BACK OR NECK HOOKING

FOR LARGER BAITS LIKE SARDINES AND MACKEREL, HOOK CROSSWISE BEHIND THE HEAD. THE BAIT STAYS LIVELY AND THE HOOK STAYS SECURE FOR CASTING. THEN THE EXPOSED POINT DOESN’T FOUL IN THE BAIT, WHICH RESULTS IN INCREASED HOOKUPS. SOME ANGLERS PREFER TO MOVE THE HOOK REARWARD AND HOOK THE BAIT UNDER THE DORSAL FIN TO PROVIDE A BETTER ANCHOR POINT.

NOSE HOOKING

HOOK BAIT EITHER CROSSWISE THROUGH THE NOSE OR UP THROUGH BOTH LIPS. HARDER TISSUE IN THE NOSE MEANS YOUR BAIT IS LESS LIKELY TO COME OFF DURING CASTING. ALSO ALLOWS SWIMMING THE BAIT BACK TO THE BOAT.

HEART OR CHEST HOOKING

HOOK SHALLOW, CROSSWISE THROUGH THE BREASTBONE OR UNDER PECTORAL FINS. DON’T HOOK TOO DEEP. POPULAR WHEN FISHING LARGER LIVE BAITS, LIKE BROWNBAITS, NEAR OR ON THE BOTTOM WITH A SINKER.
