Have you ever seen a channel catfisherman using an 8′ medium-heavy action rod w/ a saltwater reel filled w/ braid? I mean, come on the dude is gonna catch what? A monster? No. Fish in the 1-5 pound range OCCASIONALLY catching a cat 15 lbs. It’s ridiculous. All you really need for situations like this is a bass sized outfit. Yea, a 6′-7′ medium action rod, with a smaller reel with 12-20 lb. monofilament. Does people do this just to make people believe that they are catching 50 + flatheads in a 10′ creek?

I highly recommend using a flouracarbon leader while fishing topwater, crankbaits, jerkbaits, and even while puting bait on the bottom. In most places fish become line shy and will not take bait if they can see the line.
On my reel that has braided line the set up is as follows: 125 – 150 yards of 12 pound mono attached to 30 pound braid attached to about 6 foot flourocarbo leader.

casting into heavy slop from distance (30 ft. or so). Braid or heavy fluorocarbon. I have had problems in the past with wind knots while casting with braid, so I bought some 25 lb. fluoro. Is it practical to use fluoro in this situation. There is about a two inch thick mat of slop in the area I’ll be fishing.
I already have braided string rigged on two of my reels but I’m thinking on get a new combo rod for casting and lure fishing. What you advise me to get for line?
When I’m spin-cast fishing I almost exclusively use spoons or spinners, attached to a fluorocarbon leader off of braided line. Since I use braided lines I am not too concerned with line twists, and I could replace the leader easily. Would attaching a spoon or inline spinner directly to the line instead of attaching it to snap swivel give the lures more action, or should I just keep using snap swivels?
What pound test should I use when fishing for sharks at night in the Gulf of Mexico? Should I use braided line? How do you rig up for shark fishing?
