When I’m spin-cast fishing I almost exclusively use spoons or spinners, attached to a fluorocarbon leader off of braided line. Since I use braided lines I am not too concerned with line twists, and I could replace the leader easily. Would attaching a spoon or inline spinner directly to the line instead of attaching it to snap swivel give the lures more action, or should I just keep using snap swivels?
The two main reasons have already been mentioned, preventing slipping on the spool, which is self explanatory . Filling to proper level is the other reason. This is most important on a bait cast, conventional reel, much more so than a spinning reel. If the spool is not filled on a bait caster then you have decreased the rate of line retrieval and the castability of the reel. The spool must turn more times when half full to bring in the same amount of line it does when it is full. Casting a full reel is much easier than casting a half full one. Spinning reels use the bail rotating around the spool so there is not problem with retrieve rate, it will effect the way a reel casts however. In both cases fuller is better.
Also as already stated, most braided line comes in small filler spools which may or may not properly fill a reel. Backing is the solution to this problem, has nothing to do with being cheap. It’s all about doing it correctly. I have several reels with 4lb mono that when I fill them I take off half the old line and add about 100-150 yards of fresh on top. I always have fresh usable line and change 2-3 times a summer, I don’t think that’s cheap, it’s smart.
Fisher mentioned using tape to prevent slippage. This works great when you can get a full fill on a reel from a single filler spool. As far as knots go for joining backing to braided line the blood knot works when the two lines are close in diameter. If they have a large difference in diameter then I use a double uni knot. If I took a reel to a tackle store and they tied two lines together with a Granny knot there would be trouble. I would get my money back after beating who ever did it half to death. ( I say half to death because I wouldn’t get my money back, again being smart)
Just a side note, I do have to disagree with Fisher on using super glue. We tested this and found that the glue actually affected the knot strength. The braid part failed. We were setting up Penn Internationals for long range fishing using 80-130lb spectra and attaching 80-100 mono top shots.
WD this is from a west coast perspective, Now you have heard from both sides of the country and both East and West seem to agree. I’ve been filling reels for over 20years, making every kind of splice and knot you can think of. Never had a failure. You should learn to pick you arguments more carefully.
I beach fish a lot for salmon (& whatever small stuff about) & have always used 25lb Jarvis Walker mono nylon line. I use a braid line while boat fishing but have had problems with braid lines while rock fishing – too light & affected by the wind too much.
I have just bought myself a new surf casting front drag spinning reel & was wondering what strength line to put on it.
I hope someone can make sense of my waffling & can give me some advice. Should I stick to 25lb mono nylon line, or try braid line & increase the breaking strain strength to give me a slightly heavier line to combat the wind. The place where I do my fishing is actually named “Windy Harbour”.

How much and how thick mono should I put on the spool under the braid line? The declared thickness of the braid is:
UBRAID20FG 20 .009 6Lb. Test 300 Green
so equal to mono 6lb.
The reel is declared for the 8Lb thickness of the mono.
Any idea how much of the mono should I put under the braid, so that all the 300 meters of it fit on the Shimano FX4000 F fishing reel?

I Just Bought a uglystik thats 7 feet tall and says 10-25 pound line im going on a fishing trip to the ocean and expecting to catch a 50 pound fish is this possible and how? Dose a Fish weigh less in water?
